In-person events like forums and committee meetings grow the activist base; adding non-political social gatherings will strengthen relationships. Having a social event once a quarter in the mix will give people a chance to get to know each other outside the stressful political environment we find ourselves in. An effective way to do this social model is meetups.

Meetups are informal gatherings of people in public spaces with themes. The meetups format is very flexible; the basic rule is they should be free and open to the public with a strong social component. Committees interested in hosting a meetup pick a theme and location and set a date and time. There are a lot of great ideas out there, a few that I've heard are a progressive ladies' night out, a union appreciation event at a brewpub, a kids movie matinee for young families, and a digital native gaming party.
